Korean skincare brand BONAIR specializes in purrremium fermented oil.
Oil. Fermented. Yasss, let that sink in for a moment (as deep as fermented oil is supposed to sink in compared to non-fermented oil).
Be Mused Korea now stocks BONAIR’s delicious offerings and sent us some items to review. (You might know Be Mused’s founder as the lovely Lisa @beautybemused.)
Angela (normal-to-dry skin) tried BONAIR Blue Smoother Face Oil ($53/30ml) and Velvet Cream ($48/50 ml). The Blue Smoother line is targeted at dry/very dry skin and features fermented blue tansy oil and guaiazulene. ::Cue squeals over blue ingredients::
Renee (combination skin) tried BONAIR Rose Illuminator Oil Drop ($53/30ml) and Moist Cream ($48/50ml). The Rose Illuminator line is lighter weight than the Blue Smoother line (but still very moisturizing) and contains fermented rosehip oil.
BONAIR Blue Smoother Face Oil and Velvet Cream Review
Angela: Blue and roses?! It’s as if BONAIR has a direct line to my brain. I had to wipe my Pavlovian drool off the keyboard the first time I spotted the brand on Instagram.
I tried the blue stuphs…and talk about high joy!
Blue Smoother oil is 99.8% plant oil and has a cushy (almost bouncy) feel. And that blue color? No dyes here; this oil #wokeuplikethis. The scent is faintly herbal (blue tansy?) in a pleasant way. (I’m not a fan of herbal scents such as lavender or rosemary, but this one is gude.)
Among my oils, this one is medium weight. Richer than Biossance 100% Squalane but lighter than Pestle & Mortar Superstar Retinol Night Oil. Using 2-3 drops before the cream or mixed into the cream guarantees serious moisture. So comforting during winter.
Blue Smoother Velvet Cream is very appropriately named. The first time I used it, I literally stopped to grab the ingredients list. What magic was this? Was it all silicones?? I’ve tried a LOT of creams, but this one felt different: sooo smooth and slick (in a good way, not a greasy primer way).
THIS is what high quality feels like. The good news: it’s not all silicones, and dimethicone doesn’t appear until midway down the list–after water, glycerin, shea butter, and even the fermented blue tansy oil.
Immediate gratification aside, it actually leaves my skin super soft and bouncy with a moisturized sheen. To my nose, it smells herbal in the jar but fragrance-free during application. In addition to the star ingredients, it boasts marula oil, propolis and centella asiatica extracts, ceramide NP, adenosine.
Overall, the Blue Smoother line is soothing and helps my skin handle mild exfoliation from, for example, Dr. Wu 18% mandelic acid serum. (Heavy damage like tretinoin molting requires something stronger like Bioderma Matricium.)
I’m kind of bummed that the weather is getting warmer because I won’t need this level of moisture for a few months, but I’m going to mix a few drops of the oil into a light hydrating toner for added joy every day.
BONAIR Rose Illuminator Oil Drop and Moist Cream Review
Renee: Rose Illuminator Oil Drop is a bi-phase (heh) serum that needs shaking up before using. It’s 30% plant oil and 70% herbal water essence (compared to Angela’s blue oil, which is pretty much all oil).
It’s…runnier than most oils I’ve tried. It’s amazingly hydrating however. It’s a very interesting consistency that’s hard to describe. It’s like somewhere between water, serum, and oil. I ALMOST can equate it to Luna Oil from Sunday Riley in terms of hydration. It doesn’t leave a filmy residue like a lot of oils.
Rose Illuminator Moist Cream is also divine. It smells faintly of roses and is lightweight yet super smooth and nourishing. The packaging is chic and understated, yet so girlish and pretty!
I use the moisturizer after applying the above Rose Illuminator oil. I dun care about order of operations, and I’m not sure if that’s the correct approach or not. Regardless of the order, with consistent use of this pair, I’ve noticed that my face isn’t so parched even in this blustery NY spring. My T-zone doesn’t get oily and my cheeks aren’t dry at the end of the day.
The moisturizer has a firmness that’s not typical for a lightweight moisturizer. It’s also very nicely rich without being overly thick & clogging. My combination skin seriously loves it. I think this may be a winning multi-purpose-year-around type of moisturizer that I can rotate as part of my go-to collection. Hashtag this gives me a lady…bone-air. Sorry had to.
