The Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation is one of the highest rated foundations on MakeupAlley.com. At $62 it’s also one of the most expensive. And…although I do love it for my skin, it certainly isn’t for everyone. Because it’s too damn sheer for an “HD foundation.” Case in point: look below and tell me which pic is the “foundation” pic:
Yes it’s the bottom one, by a small margin.

I am officially cutting myself off from buying any more BB cushions until I can get through the ones I own. My latest acquisition is the Hanyul Luminant Cushion, adding to my collection of cushions by AmorePacific, IOPE, Laneige, and HERA (links are to past reviews).
I’ll review the Hanyul cushion first and then compare all my cushions. Update: I did an even bigger cushion roundup in this post.
Hanyul Luminant Cushion Review
I bought the Hanyul Luminant Cushion PURELY because it’s shilled by Jun Ji Hyun (Cheon Song Yi from “My Love From Another Star”). Ugh, I’m so obsessed with her glowing skin. Ji Hyun, just start the protective order proceedings now.

When I entered the Amore store, I was intent on getting the Sulwhasoo Evenfair Perfecting Cushion. I had read lovely reviews of it (e.g., The RAEviewer, Beautiful Buns) and was interested in a glowy, dewy finish for dry skin.
But once I told the saleswoman what I wanted, she steered me towards the IOPE cushion. The IOPE was moisturizing, she insisted, whereas the Sulwhasoo (and Laneige) were more drying.
And that’s why this is a review of the IOPE Air Cushion XP instead of the Sulwhasoo cushion in No. 23 Medium Beige (see, I told you I was intent on getting the Sulwhasoo).

Laneige BB Cushion in Light ($34) and HERA UV Mist Cushion Long Stay in C21 (Cool Vanilla Cover) are basically sisters. They’re nearly identical in shade and finish: a peachier NC15 and a satin finish that remains a little sticky unless you powder over it. The coverage of both is buildable to medium: capable of evening out skintone, covering redness, and softening (but not concealing) the look of spots.
This is one of the rare instances where Renee and I have the same item. Renee has the Laneige BB cushion in a slightly darker shade. She likes the even, natural, and luminous finish and the light to medium coverage.

For the second summer in a row, the AmorePacific Color Control Cushion SPF 50 is a staple in my routine. (
The product link goes to QVC, which has a video demonstration and shade guidance. No longer available on QVC.) In Asia, cushion foundations have been around for several years, but they are just now hitting the U.S. (It Cosmetics just released one. Actually my friend told me that Stila and Almay came out with cushion makeup years and years ago and lo and behold my Googling turned up Stila Pivotal Makeup.)

While I’m on a roll and shared this site with the Facebook world, I wanted to quickly review Makeup Forever’s HD Foundation, the product that everyone wants to yap about.
Here’s my non-madeup face. I know it looks like a cat’s ass right out of the shower but be patient!
So I’m lucky to have pretty smooth skin with no zitz, scars, or craters. This is from years of dedicated pampering so it’s not like I didn’t work for it! Just cuz you’re born tall doesn’t mean you can play in the NBA mmmkay?
Right after this I moisturized and slapped on 1.5 pumps of the Makeup Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation in Shade128 (Almond). I used the unscientific method of applying with my hands, no tools. The salesgirl at Alcone NYC (a profession makeup artist store for stage, film, and special effects makeup) did a swatch test. This was a shade darker than I need, but summer is here so I might as well do the “tan” look. It matched my darker forehead but my cheeks are a shade lighter.
Here are the bottle and swatch on the inner side of my left arm.
